Marmalade Trust is the UK’s leading loneliness charity for all ages and the only charity in the world specifically dedicated to raising awareness of loneliness. Through projects, they identify the people most at risk from experiencing loneliness in society, signpost them to the right support and resources and help empower them to make new friendships and connections. They also run national and international campaigns which raise awareness about loneliness across all sections of society. On both a micro and macro level they are committed to bringing about positive and lasting change.

What Projects do Marmalade Trust run to Raise Awareness of Loneliness?

Marmalade Trust’s most long-running project is their annual ‘Christmas Cheer’ lunch in the Bristol, South Glos. and the North Somerset area for ‘Marmalade members’, older and vulnerable people who would otherwise be by themselves on Christmas Day.

In 2017 they launched Loneliness Awareness Week (LAW), with one simple aim: to reduce the stigma of loneliness and encourage people to talk more openly about it. The recent pandemic has had a huge impact on the number of individuals who have experienced loneliness, but the charity has managed to overcome the barriers the pandemic has created and created a digital campaign in 2020 which has reached 271.5 million people globally, raising awareness and starting discussions on the topic.

During the pandemic, they have also launched their Winter Companions Project where support has been offered and companionship has been provided to people during the difficult winter months. They ran this project from December 2020 till March 2021 and have helped many who were struggling with being alone in the cold and dark months. They have run a telephone companion scheme where hundreds of hours of fun and friendship was provided. They have also delivered goodie bags to raise the mood and ensure that the members of their Marmalade family felt like they are part of a community and are important.
