Debra LogoNational charity DEBRA funds research and healthcare in order to support individuals and families who are affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). The charity was founded in 1978 by Phyllis Hilton. Phyllis' daughter, Debra had EB, and the charity became the world's first support group for EB patients.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a genetic skin condition which is very painful and causes the skin to blister and tear with even the slightest touch. There are many different types of the condition, from mild cases, where only the big toes are affected, to severe, which can affect any part of the body, resulting in lifelong pain and disability. Sadly, in some cases, EB can be fatal. Currently, there is no cure for the condition, but existing treatments can help alleviate some of the symptoms.

DEBRA's vision is a world where no one has to suffer with this painful genetic skin blistering condition.

How DEBRA Works

DEBRA's work focuses on two areas - research and support.

Research: The charity funds pioneering research into EB, working towards finding effective treatments, and ultimately, a cure for the condition. Research ranges from investigating the causes of the EB, a better understanding of the genetics involved and supporting clinical-care research to help improve how EB symptoms are managed.

Support: DEBRA provides many different forms of support for individuals and families affected by EB. This ranges from practical and emotional support to respite beaks, financial and educational support, and specialist healthcare. The charity also works in partnership with the NHS to help enhance healthcare and experiences for those in the EB community, as well as raising awareness of the condition and the needs associated with it.

How You Can Get Involved

With charity shop closures and cancellation of events, the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that available funds for research and support has sadly been reduced, meaning that DEBRA are in need of support more than ever. This February, we are delighted to be supporting DEBRA in our charity poll, and you can help them to win 20% of our profits by giving them your vote this month. When it comes to how donations are spent:

- A regular donation of £6.00 a month could provide 12 weeks of healthcare for an individual living with EB.

- A one-off donation of £26.00 could pay for one hour of enhanced care from a specialist EB nurse.

Please cast your vote for DEBRA this February and help them be there for individuals and families affected by EB. Thank you.
