New Beginnings Reading are taking part in the My Favourite Voucher Codes charity poll this June, and they need your help to win 20% of our profits! This Reading-based charity helps people struggling with homelessness, poverty, social isolation and financial hardship through their free cafe, hot meal service and community fridge. They also signpost people to other support services and help people access essential items and accommodation they need. What Do New Beginnings Reading Do?


New Beginnings Reading supports people who are homeless and/or experiencing financial hardship or social isolation, and are in need of support. They work in the Reading and Greater Berkshire area, providing essential items including food and clothing as well as helping people to access temporary accommodation and other support services. Alongside poverty and homelessness, a major issue that many people face in the UK is social isolation. Particularly in a post-covid world where the cost of living has risen and there is more reliance on the internet, there are few places people can go to meet others leading to many people living in isolation, particularly those who are struggling financially. Through their community support services they are able to provide people in need with food and drink, as well as offering them a place to socialise and meet other people. 

 

What Services do New Beginnings Reading Provide? 


New Beginnings Reading provides a range of services to help people access the support they need. 

All Day Cafe: Their all day cafe is open to anyone and provides a happy, friendly environment for people to socialise with others or relax on their own. They offer free hot and cold drinks as well as a variety of snacks such as biscuits and cakes. The cafe is run by volunteers and is open 11am-3pm on Mondays and Thursdays. 

Hot Meal Service: On Tuesdays between 6pm and 7pm they also provide a free hot meal service, where anyone can come along and enjoy a free freshly cooked meal. Once a month, during the Tuesday hot meal service, they also host a fun event which is usually a quiz or bingo, and they are always open to new ideas for monthly events. 

Community Fridge Service: The Community Fridge Service is a drop in service which provides free non-perishable and fresh foods. There is no need to get a referral or appointment to use this service, as it is open to everyone, and it is open every Wednesday at 12pm-1pm and every Thursday and Friday 6pm-7pm. 

Toiletries and Clothing: As well as their community fridge service, they also help people access free clothing and toiletries. They offer the clothing service the first Monday of every month and the toiletries service the first Tuesday and Wednesday of every month. 

*All Night Cafe Shelter for the Homeless: The all night cafe shelter is a place for homeless people to come for a hot meal, a bed for the night, clean clothing and breakfast.

*The All Night Cafe is currently closed until further notice. 

 

How Can I Support New Beginnings Reading? 


New Beginnings Reading would not function without the help of their incredible volunteers and supporters. There are several ways you can help New Beginnings Reading such as by volunteering your time, fundraising for them, donating money to support their work or donating items. 

Volunteer: They are always in need of volunteers to help at the cafe, the hot meal service and the community services, helping to cook food, give items to people in need, transport goods or support people through signposting. There is a role for everyone, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with their team if you want to become a volunteer. 

 Donate: Donations of money, food, clothing and essential items are always needed, so if you have a spare bottle of shower gel or some trainers that you no longer need, then get in touch.
