About Sussex Cancer Fund

The Sussex Cancer Fund is a local charity established in 1981 to work with the NHS to create new and improved facilities providing the best possible cancer care for Sussex. The NHS continues to see budgets tightly squeezed, and with more people being diagnosed with cancer, this increases the need for the Sussex Cancer Fund to help bridge the gap. This can be through paying for vital equipment, improved services, and funding research.

Unlike many charities, their costs are exceptionally low so that almost all money donated can be spent directly to benefit patients. In recent years they have rebuilt and refurbished the Sussex Cancer Centre, providing improved equipment and facilities to help care for patients. Sussex Cancer Fund also provides Sussex Hospitals with specialist equipment such as Chemotherapy chairs, scanners and other treatment essentials that unfortunately in the current climate the NHS does not have the resources to supply.

The charity’s most ambitious project is the Macmillan Horizon Centre which was built in partnership with Macmillan. The long awaited Cancer Support Centre opened in November 2016 and is being used by 100s of patients regularly.

The charity also supports a number of research projects in conjunction with Brighton and Sussex Medical School. In the last three years, over £1 million has been spent supporting research projects across many treatment areas including blood, brain, bladder and breast cancers. Sussex Cancer Fund has three new projects starting soon which cover topics such as the HPV virus and cancer, leukaemia, and advanced radiography techniques.

Sussex Cancer Fund also pays for a range of services and equipment for patients including day-to-day extras that make a difficult and stressful experience a little more civilised. This includes:

- A free car park specifically for cancer patients

- Complementary therapy

- Free vending machines to provide hot fresh drinks for patients

- Newspapers and magazines

- DVD library for chemotherapy patients

The charity pays for equipment, from specialist gowns for breast cancer patients costing just £10 but which make a big difference to patients’ experiences, right through to medical equipment costing many thousands.

In summary, the money raised by Sussex Cancer Fund goes towards equipment, research funding, and building projects and services for cancer patients in Sussex. While the charity is relatively unknown, it is likely that every cancer patient in Sussex will have benefited directly by something funded by them.
