What Do Pregnancy Options Centre Do?

Pregnancy Options Centre provides support for people facing difficulties in pregnancy such as unplanned pregnancy, abortion or pregnancy loss. They do this through a free counselling service for those facing unplanned pregnancy, which allows people to discuss their thoughts and emotions freely in a non-judgemental, safe environment. They see loved ones either independently or in joint sessions.

All of their counsellors work within the BACP Code of Ethics and Practice, respecting the autonomy of clients when making their choices. Their work is client-centred, allowing people to identify their own areas of concern, and they always strive to create a supportive environment where emotions can be expressed and potential solutions to problems can be explored. They provide ongoing emotional and practical support whatever the outcome.

“You were very understanding and not at all judgmental, which was very important for me and allowed me to be completely honest and open...  Your help has been absolutely massive and words can't thank you enough. When I talked to you, it felt like you really understood what I was saying and it was very supportive.”   (Client in her 30's)

Support for People Post-Abortion

The Options Counselling team also provides one-to-one support to people experiencing difficulties after an abortion. Sometimes people find it harder to adjust following an abortion than expected, and the Pregnancy Options Centre counselling support helps clients to process their experience and emotions in a healthy way. For post-abortion clients, they work through a 12-step programme, to help clients to explore their thoughts, feelings and reactions. Feelings following an abortion can often be confusing, mixed and difficult to deal with, with natural feelings such as relief or hope being experienced alongside sadness, regret or anger. Pregnancy Options Centre helps clients to realise that their emotions are not uncommon, helping them to feel less alone and to be able to explore these feelings further.  This specially designed course helps clients feel reassured.

Support for Ectopic Pregnancies, Miscarriages and Stillbirths

They also provide sensitive counselling support to people who have experienced a Miscarriage, Ectopic Pregnancy or Stillbirth. Their counsellors work one-to-one with clients as they come to terms with their loss. They also provide one-to-one support with a specialist for people who have had a Termination for Medical Reasons (TFMR) due to foetal abnormalities. They help clients to grieve their loss and to take time to process their experience.

"Options provides a safe place where clients can be referred when facing life changing decisions, offering expertise, support and care. They offer services that are not being covered by statutory organisations. Therefore, they are an invaluable resource for our community." - Local Health Professional.

Where Are Pregnancy Options Centre Based?

Their service covers Chichester and Arun and the surrounding areas, all the way from Littlehampton up to the Midhurst and Petworth regions. Pregnancy Options have also set up a satellite counselling service for Portsmouth and surrounding areas as of this year. The Centre’s crucial support now covers Emsworth, Havant, Waterlooville, Hayling Island, Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, where previously no other such service has existed. In addition to the counselling service, Pregnancy Options Centre also delivers interactive educational workshops in local schools, colleges, and youth settings.

Working with Schools

Options also delivers informative, engaging and interactive sessions on Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE). They work with primary and secondary schools as well as local colleges and youth clubs across the Arun and Chichester districts, engaging with over 2000 young people each year.

Each session can be tailored to meet the needs of the school and the group they are working with. The aim of their Education project is to ensure young people are well equipped to deal with the changes they will experience on their journey to adulthood and aid them with the tools to make well-informed decisions and have healthy relationships. The range of sessions that they offer include information on puberty, contraception, online safety and the awareness of the Dangers of Pornography.
