What does Clean Cornwall do?

Clean Cornwall provides a range of environmental services across the county, ranging from litter picking equipment loans to educational school workshops. They are best known for their free litter picking services, which allows thousands of volunteers each year to get outdoors, get active, socialise and keep their local area as litter-free as possible. In 2022 alone, Clean Cornwall received more than 3000 volunteer registrations, and recorded the collection of 1858 bags of litter from nearly 100 unique locations across Cornwall. Anybody can register a litter pick with Clean Cornwall completely free, or join in an existing pick – no experience required!

Despite their small two-person team, Clean Cornwall also regularly provides local schools and colleges with free, interactive educational workshops to help further environmental education and encourage the next generation to take pride in their environment and its conservation.

Clean Cornwall also hosts a growing sustainable business network called the Change Makers, which was launched in 2022. Through this network, Clean Cornwall has now collaborated with more than 20 businesses and organisations in Cornwall and surrounding counties to help reduce their environmental impacts and improve sustainability, bringing them together with sustainability experts in regular events.

Why support Clean Cornwall?

Each year, Clean Cornwall’s services provide much needed opportunities for thousands of individuals to reconnect with nature, get outdoors and do something positive for the planet. The environmental benefits are obvious, but litter picking has also been proven to provide people with a host of health and wellbeing benefits such as reduced stress, improved cognitive ability, and increased connection to the natural world. Not to mention the strong sense of achievement and pride gained from cleaning up your local area. Clean Cornwall no longer receives council funding, so the continuation of these services relies solely on donations, grants and business membership. Your vote and support could help to keep these services running to help keep people connected and active all year round.

What else does Clean Cornwall do?

Clean Cornwall has run several successful environmental campaigns, with one of the most recent being the “Poo Dog” anti dog-fouling sculpture series installed in secret locations across Cornwall. This campaign hit headlines, being featured on BBC News and even reaching The Australian newspaper! This lighthearted project involves the creation of several canine sculptures made almost entirely from waste collected across Cornwall.

This project is set to continue throughout the year alongside the “Boo To Plastic” Halloween campaign, aiming to reduce plastic waste and minimise our environmental impact over the holiday and share plastic-free tips and tricks for others to get inspired by.

On a more serious note, Clean Cornwall has also recently launched the Blue Litter Project, which has been kickstarted with new funding. Like many other environmentalists, the Clean Cornwall team have become increasingly concerned about the volume of plastic pollution currently circulating our stunning coasts. In response, they have launched an ambitious new project that will span across the next year, providing members of the marine leisure industry with the equipment and tools they need to collect marine litter as they encounter it.

The collection of litter from remote marine spaces will undoubtedly help to improve the quality of our remote marine spaces for both wildlife, flora and people alike to enjoy and thrive in. This project will help protect our fragile ecosystems, and allow those who rely on Cornwall’s stunning natural blue spaces to take practical action to protect them.
