About Magic Breakfast and Our Impact

At Magic Breakfast,  we ensure that no child in our partner schools is too hungry to learn by providing healthy breakfast food and expert support to help identify and reach those pupils at risk of hunger. A hungry child cannot concentrate so could miss out on half a day of lessons every school day if not given anything nutritious to eat first thing.

We work with over 1,000 Primary, Secondary and ASL/Special Educational Needs schools, plus Pupil Referral Units, offering breakfasts to over 200,000 children each school day.

The impact on a hungry child of eating a nutritious breakfast is not only immediate to see, but it can affect that child’s whole path in life.

Independent research, funded by the Education Endowment Foundation and carried out by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, found that Y2 pupils in schools providing a free, nutritious 'magic' breakfast boosted their reading, writing and maths by an average of 2 months’ progress per year, compared to pupils in schools with no such breakfast provision.

Over 200,000 children normally start their school day with a healthy 'magic' breakfast thanks to the generosity of our supporters.  However we urgently need to raise more funds to enable us to reach every child in the UK who starts their school day too hungry or malnourished to learn, especially in the light of Covid-19 and the cost of living crisis which have led to many more families struggling financially.

How much is the cost to feed one child?

28p can provide a nutritious breakfast to a disadvantaged child

How does this benefit children?

Due to the increase in cost of living the need for support is only increasing and the need for continued support is greater than ever

  • 31% of children in the UK are living in poverty

  • A hungry child cannot concentrate, and are more likely to be restless, unhappy, lethargic, distracted, and disruptive putting them at risk of missing out on vital hours of their education.

  • In England by the time a disadvantaged child finishes primary school they are 9.3 months behind academically in comparison to their wealthier peers. By the time a disadvantaged child completes their GCSE’s this gap has increased to 18 months.
