What Does Star Bereavement Do?


Star Bereavement is a children and young people bereavement support charity based in Wakefield. The charity provides a variety of support for children and young people aged up to 25 who are experiencing the death of someone important to them. Bereavement support services are delivered by bereavement practitioners.

The death of an important attachment figure such as a parent or sibling at a young age can be an extremely traumatic an overwhelming experience for a young person to have to face.

No child or young person should feel alone in their grief and no young person should face barriers when accessing mental health support. The charity provides free and accessible services open to all young people and families facing loss, creating safe spaces to discuss loss and grief with bereavement practitioners.

Star Bereavement’s vision is for bereaved young people and children to access appropriate support to rebuild their lives after a death. By actively providing therapeutic, group, school, peer and family support and advice the charity continues to improve the mental health of bereaved young people, children and families accessing the service.

 

What Services do Star Bereavement Provide?

Star Bereavement provides a variety of bereavement support directly with young people and children aged up to 25 including:

  • ·1:1 therapeutic work: This consists of practitioners working with service users on a one-to-one basis, working through their needs around the loss they have experienced.

  • Group/peer support: This support consists of Star Bereavement hosting group sessions. Children and young people of a similar age and with experiences of loss are given opportunities to meet in a safe space to share their stories and work as a group with practitioners to identify what they need to move forward.

  • Bereavement workshops/drop ins: Across Wakefield, Star Bereavement host rolling drop ins every Friday in community hubs and centres where anyone can access information and advice with professionals around grief for 2 Hours.

  • School groups: Group sessions of up to 8 pupils in school, practitioners work with students to identify needs and support them in their journey through grief introducing coping skills.


Alongside this, the charities bereavement practitioners deliver advice and information for families, carers and professionals continuously.
